Dear Julia:
My friend's two-year-old daughter has had contact with an evil spirit who tormented her by doing things like sitting on her chest and making violent threats about her family. A medium came to the house and stated that there was indeed this spirit who was murdered by townspeople on this site sometime early in the last century. She said he was evil and just short of a poltergeist. They have since moved from the home, and now her daughter sees animals, such as an orangutan hanging from the ceiling, or a buffalo in the hall. Are these spirits coming to her threatening as well? Is she a born medium? It seems like she has been seeing non-physical entities since she was born. She is also a very willful little girl. She carries herself with such confidence and direction. Are there books on how to raise a child with these gifts?
Thank you for your assistance!
Catherine
Dear Catherine:
Yes! There are hundreds of books available on this subject. Just go to amazon.com and plug "psychic children" into the search engine. Some of the most respected researchers/writers include Doreen Virtue, James F. Twyman and Lee Carroll and Jan Tober, though I'm sure there are other wonderful books out there. While I'm not crazy about the term "psychic protection," you may want to pick up a couple of books on this subject as well, for they will help you to understand the nature of energy, and how we can consciously work to attract only desirable experiences. While everyone can benefit from this knowledge, those who are psychically gifted like this little girl really need it.
Your friend's daughter is a natural born medium. She probably saw lots of other spirits before the "evil one" who didn't alarm her, so no one knew about her gift. She is only two years old, after all, and probably presumed that all the non-physical stuff she was seeing was just as normal as the physical. When this "evil spirit" entered her experience, she reacted as she would have if a menacing stranger had threatened her: she got scared and told her mother about it.
While most children can perceive spirits, and some of them can be scary, it is rare for a young child to have any sort of interaction with an overtly "evil" spirit. Small children generally have very high vibrations and are surrounded by loving spiritual energies. Dark experiences don't usually crop up until adolescence, when raging hormones and wild behavior lead many of us into all kinds of dramatic situations. For psychic kids, this involves interesting characters in the physical as well as the non-physical. This negative entity must have been attached to the house as opposed to attracted to her energy, since moving solved the matter.
As for the animals she is seeing, I feel that discarnate spirits are taking this form in order to not scare her. It's interesting to note that the word "animal" has its roots in the Latin word for "soul." If you think about it, with a child this young, appearing as an animal makes a lot of sense. Children are surrounded by animals in story books, movies, television shows, toys, room decorations, etc. To children, most animals are delightful, and they haven't yet developed any rules about what is "ridiculous," "impossible" or just plain "silly." By taking animal form, non-physical entities may be trying to appear non-threatening, especially in the wake of that "evil" experience. I feel it's working too; she is not really scared by these animals, aside from how this mode of perception reminds her of how she perceived that dark entity. Spirits get very excited when one of us can perceive them; that's why they're appearing to her in the first place.
As for how you can help her, first keep in mind that if you or her parents react with fear to what she tells you she sees, she will learn to be afraid. If a child told me about the "evil spirit" experience, I would very confidently tell them that they have all the power over their own experience, and then explain how they can tap into it and blast away any shadows just by turning up their own light. I would make it sound like common sense, simple and easy (and to me, it is). If the child told me about the animals, I would express delight and fascination. I would ask questions such as, "How do you feel when you see them? Do you think they've come just to visit you, or are you sort of just noticing that they are there? Do you think they would talk to you if you talked to them? Do they come to tell you something? What is it?" (Etc.) Let her find the answers herself with your help and support. She is clearly gifted; the answers she receives will amaze you.
I have successfully worked with kids who see non-physical entities, including entities that are frightening. With a child this young, I would simply guide her to a conscious relationship with a guardian angel. Teach her that she is always protected, and that she has only to think of "the light" and feel the light in her heart to summon a powerful and loving angel to her side. There is a wonderful book of guided meditations for children called Moonbeam by Maureen Garth. You can adapt one of these or simply come up with your own. I'd write one out here, but my space is limited. Make this a ritual that she can turn to whenever she needs to whether someone is there to help with it or not.
Begin with a peaceful atmosphere by using soft lighting (not candles!) and soothing New Age music. You might even read a spiritual children's book to her first, to help her get into the right frame of mind. Then tell her that you're going to tell her a "true story" about HER; children love that sort of thing. Lay down with her and explain that you're going to close your eyes because you can see the spirit world better that way. She will probably mimic you and close her eyes too.
Adapt the story/meditation to the child's own interests, incorporating elements that will be especially interesting to her. You can make it slightly different every time, but the basic format should remain the same. It should include visualization of a light that grows brighter and brighter, thus dispelling all shadows for miles. As this light turns up, she sees her guardian angel there, and the angel folds her wings around her. Once inside the angel's wings, she discovers a magical land where everything is sparkly and beautiful. This place is full of her favorite things and people. Only things she loves and things that love her can enter there. Whenever she feels unsure of anything she is experiencing, she can turn on that same music and turn on her inner light and find her angel, who will wrap her soft feathery wings around her. If you need help with this, an energy healer (in this case a Spiritualist minister would be particularly helpful) can help her with strengthening and controlling her auric boundaries.
This approach can also work with older kids and adults, but while they can always call upon guardian angels, they should also learn how to control their own energetic boundaries. They should be taught about the law of attraction and the power of faith. They must learn that the only thing to truly fear is fear itself, and how they are the ultimate authority over their own experience. They must be taught to always align with the highest truth, and to live by their own high moral code. If they are guided to stay on the high road in their own spiritual journeys, the quality of their experiences will naturally be high as well.
