I have heard that you can protect yourself and friends from ill wishers and other harmful people by putting a white light around yourself or those you wish to protect. Is this true? How does it work, and how do you do it?
First I think it's important to address the whole issue of feeling like we need protection. What we focus on is what we attract, so if we focus on something bad potentially happening, we're lining ourselves up with what we don't want. "Where thoughts go, energy flows." Any time we have a "negative" emotion, it means our vibration is sinking and we're aligning with something we don't really want. So when we start to worry or feel nervous, it's important to get very conscious of our thoughts and feelings and to take control of our energy.
This is not to say that using the "white light of protection" doesn't work. When approached properly, it works beautifully, because in focusing on light and protection, we raise our vibration to align with that higher energy. When it doesn't "work," it's not because the method is faulty; it's because it wasn't truly employed. Some people THINK they're using the white light of protection, when all they're really doing is panicking. Of course, desperately trying to drum up the white light of protection when you can't do anything else won't hurt. Goodness knows that many have experienced miracles by requesting divine intervention in a moment of need. It's far more effective, however, to use this method to shift ourselves out of fear altogether. If we notice fear or worry and we immediately shift our focus and energy toward true well-being, then we have effectively risen above harm.
I was in a wonderful spiritual class years ago, and the instructor told a true story that I will never forget. It seems that a friend of hers was on a long flight during some rough weather. This woman was very nervous, but she knew about the white light of protection, so she simply closed her eyes and focused all of her attention within. She kept affirming that she was safe and that angels watched over her, that all was well in her world, while visualizing herself surrounded by protective white light. As the plane rocked with turbulence and the cabin filled with the fear of the other passengers, she kept her focus within on total well-being.
Sadly, the plane did go down. Everywhere around her was devastation, and the passengers next to her, in front of her and behind her were killed, but she was completely unharmed. She then felt horribly guilty, for she wondered if she had surrounded the entire plane with white light if perhaps they would all be safe and sound.
So now that I've got you good and motivated to try it, how do you do it? Simply visualize yourself bathed in a radiant white light. You can imagine it streaming down on you from heaven, or you can imagine it simply radiating out from you like your aura. Some teachers recommend that you visualize it impermeable like an egg shell. Others suggest you make it your own by adding any details that appeal to you, like purple stars or white diamonds, etc. You can also see yourself guarded by an invisible force field that is endless: it extends indefinitely above you, below you, and all around you. I like to BECOME the light, to imagine I'm so pure and bright that nothing shadowy can get anywhere near me. There really is no wrong way to do this, for the whole purpose is simply to get you focused AWAY from whatever is making you afraid or nervous, and focused ON well-being. The exact appearance of the white light is irrelevant; the important thing is the feeling of well-being that it generates within you.
As you're visualizing yourself surrounded by white light, remember that you are ever watched over by divine beings such as guides, angels, etc. Affirm that well-being abounds, and that no matter how bad things may look at the moment, miracles happen every day. "Know" deep down that one way or another, you will always find your way to well-being. Then project yourself into the future, vividly visualizing yourself as you desire to be.
If you're traveling, you might begin to imagine your safe arrival at your destination. Imagine who will be there to greet you, or how it will feel to slip into a nice warm bed. Make it detailed, and most important of all, summon the positive emotions you will experience when it happens.
If you're worried about something like the outcome of a meeting, court case, job interview, etc., then visualize yourself in the future, smiling and feeling relieved or happy about the way things turned out. Surround yourself with that white light, lift your heart up to heaven, and give thanks in your knowing that divine forces are watching over you, protecting both your person and your interests.
Note too that while everyone seems to prescribe "white light" for psychic protection, the important thing is your energy. You could visualize yourself guarded by a steely armor of ferocious, protective magic toads, and if you were congruent with it, it would work just as well. It's all about shifting your energy away from fear and toward the attainment of what you truly desire: well-being.
You can use the white light of protection any time you don't have to wait until you're in a dire situation. If you're feeling drained by a conversation, for example, it's a sign that the other person is drawing on your energy, and you'd be wise to erect some energetic boundaries. Please remember that most outside "negative" influences are not intentional; people are just unconscious of their energy and its effects. Most people who "drain" you, for example, don't realize they're doing it. They just know that they feel bad, and that they feel better when they're talking to you. Whenever you suddenly feel negative emotion, stop and project your white light. It will protect you from negative outside influences, be they other people's issues, negative thought forms or unwanted spirits. It will also raise your own vibration, and thus shift you into a higher gear, which will draw more positive energies and experiences to you.
Consider this sort of energetic practice as something you do to take good care of yourself, like eating well, getting enough rest, brushing your teeth, etc. If you practice it regularly, you shouldn't have many problems to deal with anyway. For example, in psychic reading work, if we are aligned with working for the highest good of all concerned, we don't have to worry about being influenced by negative spiritual entities, for we're working at an energetic level far above them. This in effect "protects" us. If you approach your whole life from this same high perspective, you are effectively "protected" from negative outside influences. Consistent rituals aimed at connecting with the divine will raise your everyday vibration, and you'll come to experience negativity in a new way. Instead of fearing it or pushing against it, you'll feel rather removed from it. It's kind of like turning a lion into a kitten. Yes, you'll notice it, but it won't really concern you.
At some level, you already know what's happening energetically. Study body language, and you will see this is true. When someone beseeches you with their eyes, they are making a play for some of your energy (attention). When you cross your arms in front of your solar plexus or turn away, you are protecting your energy. Your instincts are thus already protecting you - trust them! Assume that you're protected, dwell on well-being, and you'll be fine.
